Combat Guide

Basic Combat

The most direct way to defeat enemies is by attacking them with the weapons you are holding. To do this, stand next to an enemy and then press the dpad in the direction of that enemy. Since you cannot walk in that direction, which is what the dpad usually does, the game changes your action to an attack. When you damage an enemy like this, the damage you deal is reduced by the enemy's defense stat so the number of attacks required to defeat an enemy is increased by both their HP and their defense.
Each time you move, attack, cast a spell or change your equipment, each enemy is given a chance to take a turn. If the enemy has more speed than you, they may even take more than one turn. If an enemy is standing next to you, they will use their turns to attack you. Some enemies can attack from a distance even and you will see a missle from them shoot across the room to you. Damage from enemies is reduced by your defense stat.

Focus

You can gain focus a few different ways, but to start, each time you attack, you gain some focus. When you make an attack that would fill up your focus bar, instead of increasing your focus, it spends all your focus to increase the damage that attack deals. The increased damage is based on how much focus you spend so increasing your maximum focus means that the bar will fill up slower but the focus strikes will deal more damage.
There are other ways to get focus and other uses for focus as well for you to discover.

Additional Types of Damage

You may find items or level-up rewards that lets you burn enemies. Each time an enemy takes a turn while burning, it takes damage equal to your "burn damage" stat (which starts at one.) This damage is not reduced by the enemy's defense so only their HP matters in how long it will take burn damage to defeat them. Watch out, some fire based enemies may be healed by burn damage, and most enemies can remove burn at random intervals.
Any other way you can deal damage to enemies (mostly through spells) is called "spell damage." Like burn damage, this damage is not affected by the enemy's defense. There are some enemies immune to spell damage.
Some enemies will poison you instead of dealing damage directly. In most cases, the amount of poison they inflict on you is reduced by your defense. Once you are poisoned, you will lose a set amount of HP. You can see the part of your HP that has been changed to a hollow bar to see how much damage you will take by the time the poison expires. You have two additional defensive stats that help with poison: poison slow and poison res. Poison slow reduces how much damage you take from poison each time you act. While this can lower the damage you take per turn, it does not lower the total damage you take. Poison res increases the chance that a turn of poison damage does not hurt you which will reduce the amount of total damage you take.

Experience and Levels

As you defeat enemies, you gain experience points, and as you gain experience points, you eventually gain a Level Up.
You only need four experience points for your first Level Up. The following Level Up requires nine experience points, followed by sixteen and then twenty-five. Each Level Up requires more and more experience points (it's always the next square number.) Defeating enemies further into the dungeon grants more experience points so if you get to the point where Level Ups are coming too slowly, heading deeper into the dungeon might be a good idea.
Each time you gain a Level Up, you gain HP, Mana, Focus and a small amount of Speed. You are also given three options to choose for an additional bonus. The options you are given are a bit random, but they are based on what class you are. You can change your class by talking to the people near the dungeon entrance.

Here is short overview of the five classes you can choose from:

Class NameNotes on the class
FencerClass bonuses of the fencer focus on building stronger and faster attacks. This is also the class you will be as when first start.
KnightClass bonuses of the knight focus on defense, HP and resistances to poison. Generally, Level Ups from this class should make you survive better in the dungeon.
MagiThe Magi class is well-rounded class that offers bonuses that help with magic and attacking. This is a great class if you want a little bit of everything.
SorcererClass bonuses of the sorcerer are mainly magic based. If you intend to be able to have extremely effective spells, the sorcerer is a good idea.
WizardThe Wizard class only offers bonuses that increase the power of specific spells. Because it gives three random spells to upgrade when you Level Up, it is not recommended to be a Wizard until you have unlocked every spell.
