Controls
D-Pad
Mostly the D-pad is used to moving your character around. Each time you press a button on the D-pad, if there is an open space in the direction you press, you will move there. If an enemy is in the direction you press, instead of moving, you will attack the enemy. The D-pad is also used to navigating through menus. Most menus only require Up and Down to be pressed, but some use Left and Right as well.
A-Button
The A button has a lot of different functions. It selects options in menus, but when you're walking around, the A button will interact with whatever is ahead of you (such as talking with someone or reading a book from a shelf) or below you (such as going down stairs or picking up coin from the ground.) You can also set the A button to cast a spell (you can pick which one in your spells menu once you have spells) or wait one turn (to allow enemies to advance.)
B-Button
The B button will take you out menus and when you are not in a menu, it will open up the main menu. Most functions of the game are in the main menu so you should take a look at it. The B button also has one more use: sometimes the game will ask you between a few option, you can hold down the B button to hide that menu.
The Crank
The bottom half of the information pane on the right side of the game has an area that can be scrolled with the crank. By default, it shows the combat log, but you can also have it show your spells and the game will automatically change what spell you have bound to A as you scroll through them with the crank. There are also a couple people in the game you can interact with who want you to pick a number using the crank; read their instructions and they will explain how to use the crank then. The crank can also be used to move up and down in menus.
Main Menu
During normal gameplay, if you press the B button, it will open the main menu. You can read about each menu option below. In some cases, menu items are not always available and items like that will be followed by a description of when they are available. There may even be a few more menu options that are not shown here than can be unlocked.
Reincarnate
This option is only available after you have died. Select this option in the menu to start your next run after you die.
Level up
This option is only available if you have earned enough experience to earn a level up. Select this option to redeem a level up. After selecting it, you will be given three options to pick from based on your class. Each of these options will upgrade you until the end of the current run (until you die.)
Magic
This option is only available once you have earned magic. Select this option to view your spells. After you select this, you will see a list of your spells; select any of them to learn more about them, cast them or change which spell is bound to the A button.
Potions
Select this option to view and use potions. It will show you how many of each potion you have, details on what each do and offer an option to quaff the potion. Potions are lost when used.
Backpack
Select this option to see your ten backpack slots. When you select this, you will see any items in your backpack where you can select any of them to learn more about what they are and discard any that you do not want. If you discard an item, there is no way to get it back.
Equipment
Select this option to see what items you are currently wearing and how much Coin you have. This is also where you go to change what you have equipped. Selecting an item here will let you read more about an item, remove the item (move it to your backpack) or replace it with an item from your backpack. If one of your equipment slots--left hand, right hand, neck slot, body armor--is empty, you can select it to equip an item from your backpack. Only equipped items have an effect on your stats and abilities. Equipping an item does give enemies a turn to act if you equip something near them. Some items you equip are cursed, causing you not to be able to remove it yourself; there is someone in the town who can remove it for you.
Wait
Sometimes, you may want to hold your position and let enemies act. Select this option to have enemies proceed with one turn. If enemies are slower than you, you may have to select this option multiple times.
Stats
Select this option to see in-depth details about your stats and abilities. There is a lot of detailed information in here so it may be worth it to read through it if you want to know more about the game and your currernt status.
Combat Log
Select this item to see the last 20 combat actions. This includes: enemies attacking you, you attacking enemies, spell damage you deal to enemies, when enemies are defeated and when enemies turn into new enemies.
System
The System option opens up a sub menu of options you will probably need less frequently: Settings, Load Game, Game Guide, Cheat Mode. The Settings option opens another submenu that is explained below. Load Game ends your current run and lets you pick a different save file (or the same file if you wish to have a quick way to start a new run.) Game Guide has a lot of information about the game and game tips. Cheat Mode lets you play the game without having to worry about dying or earning money; feel free to try it to learn more about the game or just to play around, once you start your next run, it will be as if you never used Cheat Mode; read the in-game description of Cheat Mode for details on what it changes.
Settings Menu
You can access a menu for adjusting certain settings for the game in the main menu by selecting System and then selecting Settings. Here you can read more about what each setting does and why you may want to change them.
Top display
This setting adjusts the top half of the information pane on the right side of the screen. By default, that area shows what items you have equipped, but you can change it to show potions, divination cards or nothing, if you prefer. In many cases, you would want to show potions as they change more often than your equipment. You may want to show divination cards for obvious reason; or if you prefer less clutter, set it to be empty.
Crank menu
This setting adjusts the bottom half of the information pane on the right side of the screen. Not only does it change what is displayed there, it also changes what the crank does during normal gameplay. By default, it shows the combat log and using the crank will let you scroll through the last twenty combat events. You can change it to instead show Spell Icons, Spell Names or Empty. Set it to empty if you want less clutter on the screen and to disable the crank functionality. If you set it to either Spell Names or Spell Icons, you can then use the crank to change which spell you have bound to the A button. Spell Icons is a much smoother interface that most will probably prefer, but Spell Names is faster and provides more obvious information.
Show Coin at the bottom
You can turn this setting on if you wish to see your Coin below the crank section of the information pane on the right side of the screen. This area also tells you when you have a level up so it will be hidden if that happens.
Wait with A button
Turn this on if you want to be able to use the Wait action with the A button. Normally, you have to access the main manu to use the Wait action, but with this on, the A button will do it immediately instead. If you have a spell bound to the A button, it will ask about casting the spell first and will then Wait if you decline. If you have a spell bound to the A button, and you have auto spells enabled, using the A button to wait may not work (as the spell would be cast instead.)
Auto spells
When you cast a spell with the A button, having Auto spells enabled will not ask you if you wish to cast that spell (and merely proceed to cast it without your confirmation) unless the spell requires you to choose more information. If the spell is a sort that you pick a cardinal direction, it will also skip the menu asking you but will put you into targeting mode where you must press a button on the d-pad to choose which way the spell is cast.
Show empty backpack slots
When looking at your backpack, you can choose for empty slots to be shown. Showing empty slots makes it easy to visually see how much space you have left, but it adds more clutter to the screen.
Show backpack capacity
This option shows your backpack capacity on the main menu. Often times, you may want to judge how much room you have to carry more items and this will make it so you don't have to go into the backpack menu to do so, but it will make the menu wider with this additional information.
Skip ranged animations
It can take a second or so for ranged enemies' projectiles to hit you. Normally, you must wait for this to finish, but if you turn this setting on, you can continue acting while the projectile is moving towards you. If you do, the animation will be skipped. You still take the damage of the attack either way, but this makes the gameplay faster at the cost of looking a bit strange.
Speed up enemy turns
Normally, each enemy takes its turn on sequential frames between your actions. This lets you see the enemy turn order and which enemies are taking multiple turns between your turns. If you turn this on, the game will try to have all enemy actions happen in one frame. This can make the gameplay faster for you, but it can cause brief lag if the enemies are particularly busy, and you will have to infer how many actions enemies from the end result.
Skip potion found message
There is a chance of finding a potion when you defeat an enemy, and a message shows on the screen to let you know this happend. This can slow things down, especially if you do not care about what potion you got or if you have drastically increased the frequency of finding potions. This option will disable that message and potions will quietly find their way into your potion belt.
Behavior when summoning
When you cast a summoning spell and you already have a summon, normally you must choose between the new summon and the current summon. You can set this setting to have it always take the new one or, if for whatever reason you may want it, always keep the old one.
Screenshake when attacked
If you dislike how the screen shakes when you are attacked, you can turn it off here. If you do, keep a good eye on your HP bar.
Town Menu
South of the well in town, there is a gate you can go through to access a menu that has a few options about exploring the rest of the town or leaving the town. Here is an explaination of these options.
Vendors in Giant's Well
As you complete quests for the townspeople, they may unlock vendors for you to access. These locations offer a variety of things such as shops and a few other surprises. Each times you finish a new quest, check here to see if there is something new.
Rewards around Giant's Well
As you complete quests for the townspeople, they may unlock rewards for you to access. These locations offer you Coin or an item. You may collect this reward once per run. Each times you finish a new quest, check here to see if there is something new.
The Eastern Forest
This option will take you to a forest on the east side of town filled with shadow monsters. These enemies do not provide experience or potions and they get stronger if you are carrying any relics. At the end of the forest is an alter for placing spell relics to increase the damage of one of your spells. Visit the temple in the north part of town to get a spell relic and bring it here. Be careful, the enemies here can get quite strong based on the relic.
Out into the world
This lets you leave the town. You can choose between "Leave but return soon" and "Never return". If you choose "Never return", it ends your run. Use this if you want to start over a run. Choosing "Leave but return soon" will reroll which townspeople are near the well in town. These are the people who give quests so this is useful if you have already done the quests they offer or you are not interested in completing them. Rerolling townspeople cannot happen more than once in a real-life span of an hour.
